箱根地域を含む伊豆半島は、かつては本州の南方にある火山島でした。これがフィリピン海プレートの運動により本州に近づき、200万年ほど前から海底に土砂が堆積し、足柄層群と呼ばれる地層が形成されました。さらに70万年ほど前には本州と衝突し、さらに押され続けたため、この足柄層群が隆起し、足柄山地が生まれました。周辺には、プレートの圧力によりほぼ垂直になった地層が見られます。
その中からは、ハマグリの化石をはじめ、カキやオオノガイが生きていた有様を示す化石も見つかっています。この地域の成り立ちを知る上で重要な場所であり、市の天然記念物に指定されており、現在では南足柄市郷土資料館で、過去に採取されたハマグリ化石の大型標本を見学することができます。
Once Izu peninsula was a volcanic island in the southern part of Japan's main island of Honshu.
- It moved closer to Honshu as earth and sand accumulated in the bottom of the sea for approximately 2 million years ago—pushing the Philippine Sea plate and creating the Ashigara rock formation.
- It collided with Honshu approximately 700,000 years ago and the movement continues even today.
- The Ashigara formation arose, and the Ashigara Mountains were created. Clam, pacific oyster and soft-shell clam fossils were found in the area.
